Loss and Pain

To love is to risk. To love much is to risk much. To love completely is to risk hopelessly. But every day, we are drawn to interact, and then to like, then to love, to love much, and in a rare human privilege, to love absolutely. Now I understand why some careers do not allow for attachment or even emotion. I see why Paul would ask those who are committed to the cause of Christ to tread carefully on matters relationships- especially when your journey features floggings, prison, shipwrecks, mob-justice, arbitrary arrests, and ultimately, summary execution. It would be unfair to take someone’s daughter through such a romantic roller-coaster. Yet every day, we are drawn, attracted, enticed, even seduced to walk this path- a path of absolute privilege, yet holding within it the certainty of a looming disaster should the beloved begone!
